Primary Source Verification for IMGs Moving to Australia

For International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking medical registration in Australia, verifying medical qualifications is a mandatory step. This process, known as Primary Source Verification (PSV), is required under the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law and is conducted through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) via the MyIntealth/EPIC system.
This guide provides a step-by-step breakdown to help IMGs navigate PSV efficiently and confidently.
What is Primary Source Verification (PSV)?
PSV refers to the authentication of medical qualifications directly from the institution that issued them. It ensures that all credentials held by IMGs are genuine and meet Australian standards.
All IMGs applying through the Standard Pathway, Competent Authority Pathway, or Specialist Pathway must complete PSV through ECFMG's EPIC platform.
Step 1: Check Your Medical School, Degree Title & Graduation Year
- Use the AMC Medical School Eligibility Check to confirm your institution is recognised.
- Visit the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDoMS) and:
- Ensure your school includes an ECFMG sponsor note
- Confirm your degree title and graduation year are listed
Step 2: Create a MyIntealth/EPIC Account
- Register at the EPIC platform
- Upload your medical diploma and, if applicable, postgraduate/specialist qualifications
- Nominate the AMC to receive your verification report
- Refer to ECFMG’s special instructions for Australia for full compliance
Your MyIntealth ID typically arrives within 2–3 business days and is needed to complete your AMC portfolio.
Step 3: Create an AMC Candidate Account
- If you do not already have an account, create one on the AMC Candidate Portal
- If your account was created before October 1, 2015, you must register for a new account
Step 4: Submit Qualifications for Verification
Submit the required documents based on your registration pathway:
- Standard Pathway: Final medical diploma/primary qualification
- Competent Authority Pathway: Final medical diploma/primary qualification
- Specialist Pathway / Short-Term Specialist Training:
- Final medical diploma/primary qualification
- Postgraduate or specialist qualifications (if required)
Step 5: Proceed with Your Eligible Pathway
After your documents are uploaded and your AMC candidate account is active, you can move forward with your chosen registration pathway. Refer to the relevant guide on the AMC or Medical Board of Australia website for full details.
Step 6: Monitor Your Verification Status
- Once verification is complete, nominate the AMC to receive your results
- To check status, log in to your AMC account and select ‘See qualifications’
- Your verified documents will be visible to:
- The Medical Board of Australia (AHPRA)
- Nominated specialist medical colleges (if applicable)
