Your Working Holiday Bucket List
Thinking of taking a working-holiday to the UK and working locum healthcare positions? Great! But, what about the holiday part? People from all walks of life can find recreation that you can’t have anywhere else in the world. From the British Isles to the European Continent, a plethora of unique experiences await. Here are some you won’t want to miss…
Sporting Adventures
Feeling ambitious? Join the ranks of runners who take part in the annual London Marathon. Held in April, the London Marathon starts in Blackheath and follows the River Thames for 26 miles. If you’re not quite up to running, you can watch from one of several spectator points along the route.
Tennis fans have the opportunity to enter the Wimbledon ballot. Using the ballot system is a way to avoid waiting in long queues for hours on end. There’s a deadline to consider if you wish to enter. The ballot will open on 1st September, and close 31st December this year. It’s worth throwing your hat into the ring for a chance to see a world-famous sporting event.
Don’t despair if you don’t get drawn from the Wimbledon ballot. French Open tickets are considerably easier to obtain. You’ll have to hop over to Paris to see this tournament. Luckily, trains running from St. Pancras International to Gare du Nord will get you there in under three hours.
Festival-goers Paradise
Possibly the most famous of European festivals is Glastonbury. In late June, Pilton, Somerset is abuzz with some 200,000 music fans. Be prepared for crowds, and tent camping. But also get ready to see some exciting shows, put on by chart toppers and comeback kings. The festival has featured the likes of Adele, Beyoncé, Radiohead and Dolly Parton.
For a festival that’s smaller in scale, Snowbombing is the way to go. Located in Austria, the Alps provide a background to live music acts at Snowbombing. Spas, saunas, and swimming pools can be found nearby. Become a true ‘Snowbomber’, and wear your best costume based on the yearly theme.
Cultural Celebrations
Scotland is rich with historical ceremonies - and not of the sombre variety. Celtic traditions are revived during The Highland Games. Events take place all over the country, mainly during the summer months. You’ll experience Scottish hospitality, music, dancing, and some pretty unique sports all in one place. Caber toss, anyone?
Beer enthusiasts can partake in the world’s largest beer festival. Munich, Germany, serves as host to Oktoberfest, starting in the last week of September. World-class beer, food, games, and gift booths attract visitors from the far corners of the globe. In 2018, over 6 million people dropped by Munich for Oktoberfest.
If you’re a fan of cheese, head to Cooper’s Hill just outside of Gloucester during the Spring Bank Holiday. Here you will find the unusual and delightfully entertaining event of cheese rolling. The rules are simple: chase a wheel of cheese that’s been sent rolling down the 650-foot hill. Catch the cheese (or cross the finish line first), and it’s yours. Up until 2013, a real wheel of cheese was used. It has since been replaced by a foam replica after several injuries were inflicted by the curd of prey.
