Common questions

What is a physician associate?

A physician associate is a qualified healthcare professional with training in basic aspects of patient diagnosis and management, including carrying out physical examinations and interpreting test results. Physician associates are part of the wider medical team that supports doctors in GP surgeries and hospitals. They spend most of their day meeting with patients in a healthcare facility, and may also be expected to carry out home visits from time to time. Physician associates may be required to work shifts, and both part-time and full-time physician associate jobs are available.

How are physician associates different from physicians?

Physician associates work alongside physicians, or doctors, to carry out essential medical examinations and diagnose illnesses. However, they are not doctors, and all physician associates must work under the supervision of a qualified doctor. Physician associates are not currently able to prescribe medicines or refer patients for more advanced testing such as x-rays and CT scans, while physicians can.

What is a physician associate's salary?

The average physician associate salary differs between countries, although physician associates in the UK start on band 7 of the NHS pay scale, earning around £40,000 per annum. With experience, physician associates can earn over £50,000 per year in the UK. Physician associates working in London or the South East of England may also be eligible to receive additional cost of living payments. Physician associate roles abroad may pay a little more or less than this.

What qualifications do physician associates usually have?

Most physician associates have undergraduate qualifications in biosciences, nursing, or healthcare and more advanced training such as a physician associate apprenticeship or a PGDip/Master's degree. It's also possible to study an undergraduate integrated Master of Physician Associate Studies (MPAS) programme at two universities in the UK: the University of Reading and the University of Central Lancashire.
