Top 5 reasons locum work in Northumbria should be high on your list

When you begin searching for healthcare jobs, you may look locally or think about relocating and beginning a new life in a fresh location. Whether you are already living in the Northumbria area or not, this is a fantastic place to find a wide variety of locum jobs. Aside from the career opportunities, what other reasons are there for choosing to work and live in Northumbria? We take a look at five of the best reasons to add this incredible part of the country to your list when seeking locum work, including some of the best areas to live and what you can look forward to when staying there.

1. Incredible places to live

The area covered by Northumbria is wide and diverse, with cities, towns and villages that are perfect for any kind of lifestyle. Perhaps the best-known city around this area is Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which boasts an impressive range of universities and schools, as well as an international airport within easy reach. This thriving city is a great place to live if you wish to easily access the nearby towns and villages in Northumbria, but you can just as easily live in some of the other lovely areas while knowing you are in easy reach of a bustling, cosmopolitan city.

If you are seeking a slower and quieter pace of life where you can still enjoy history and culture, as well as easy commuting to many different hospitals and surgeries with locum work available, then the small market town of Hexham has been declared one of the happiest places to live in the UK, and Alnwick is quiet and historical while being only thirty miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Similarly, the most northerly town in England, Berwick-upon-Tweed is a harbour town nudging the Scottish border - ideal for weekend getaways. Traditional, picturesque Morpeth is another place that is considered one of the loveliest places to live in the UK, where you can enjoy a feeling of isolation without truly being too far from plenty to see and do.

2. Fantastic foodie scene

Wherever you choose to set up home in Northumbria, you will enjoy a fantastic and diverse food scene. Gateshead Quayside in Newcastle-upon-Tyne is the perfect place to discover street food, but there is an abundance of independent restaurants and cafes dotted across the city. Further out from this central hub, you will find traditional pub grub in the inns of Hexham and Alnwick, many of which make the most of the local meat and fish trade. Combining international cuisine such as Italian and Indian eateries with traditional British fare, there is something for every palate no matter where you are - make sure to head to the Morpeth area to enjoy the highly rated seafood at Jasper’s Bistro in Amble.

3. Rich history and culture

Perhaps one of the best reasons to consider the Northumbria area for locum work is the rich history and culture you will find in every corner. In Berwick-upon-Tweed, you will discover plenty about the town’s history of being sometimes-English and sometimes-Scottish, with a blend of both histories and cultures evident throughout the town. Alnwick Castle is a must-visit spot - built after the Norman conquest, this iconic castle and country house is known for its beautiful Gothic architecture and highly rated restaurant, as well as being a filming location where magic and history go hand in hand. Each town in this area is bursting with hundreds of years of stories, and even the highly modern city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne is home to a castle, multiple art galleries and museums, and the nearby North Tyneside Steam Railway. You will never be at a loss for things to enjoy and discover during your spare time.

4. Ideal for nature lovers

Northumbria has long been known as a paradise for those who enjoy natural as well as historical wonders, and there is no mystery as to why. It is home to some of the most gorgeous beaches in the UK, such as the golden sands of Bamburgh Castle Beach, Alnmouth Beach, and the seven-mile-long sand and dunes of Druridge Bay. Blyth Beach is ideal for anyone who wants to see not only the rolling waves and sandy dunes, but the wildlife that occupies the ocean and its surroundings too. Designated as a Special Nature Conservation area, lucky visitors might be able to spot seals, porpoises and even wild dolphins splashing around in the sea. For those who prefer hiking in hillscapes, the Northumberland National Park is a wonderful destination for walkers who want to see natural beauty and historic villages and architecture or stroll the Northumberland Coastal Path. There are so many highlights when on walks or bicycle rides, and you can even cycle along Hadrian’s Wall if you want a true challenge or a fun family day out under the wide northern skies.

5. Nightlife and entertainment

Work will surely keep you busy in Northumbria, but there are many opportunities to let your hair down and relax in its busy and diverse towns and cities. The Tanners Arms in Alnwick will provide a wonderful ale house atmosphere serving local ales and a range of whiskies, with live music regularly taking place in a relaxed and upbeat environment. The Radio Rooms in Berwick-upon-Tweed is another place where you can experience a range of live music, or head to Newcastle-upon-Tyne for the evening for a night out at one of its many nightclubs like the Riverside, or a night of high culture at the Newcastle Theatre Royal or Tyne Theatre and Opera House. There really is something for every taste!
