Working in the UK during Covid: An insight from an Aussie Physiotherapist

In our latest blog, we catch up with Jess, an Aussie Physiotherapist who came to the UK to work during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jess shares her experiences of what it’s been like to come to the UK and what her work has been like. Please read Jess’ insights below.

Q. You recently came over to the UK for a working holiday. How have you found it so far?

A. It has been relaxing so far. I self-isolated for the first 10 days which was a good opportunity to get over jet lag, look up things to do in the area, try new recipes. Since then I’ve started a job, am learning to surf and most weekends am either exploring the beaches or hills.

Q. How easy was it to find work?

Very easy. Alan was great and secured a 2-month job for me just before I moved here at a hospital with half an hour’s commute to get me started.

Q. Was it tough getting out of Australia?

A. Yes and no. I had to apply for an exemption from the Australian government to leave Aus, which took about 30 hours of grafting over a few weeks to put together a request with enough evidence that I was moving overseas for a compelling reason. After I was approved on my 2nd attempt, the rest was straightforward. It was just a matter of being organised in advance and knowing what needed to be done and in which order, like a covid test in Australia, pre-purchasing covid tests in the UK, passenger locator form and travel insurance. The flight itself went smoothly from Sydney airport; I just needed to have all of the above items printed and handy.

Q. What would your advice be for an Aussie/Kiwi looking to come, but are concerned now might not be the right time?

A. You’ve got to be prepared to adjust your mindset in regards to holidays. If you’re happy to wait indefinitely for a trip to Europe then bite the bullet and come, just make sure you’ve got savings behind you. There is heaps to see and do in the UK. Day to day restrictions are tighter here than in Australia, but if you’re thinking of moving for reasons other than to travel in Europe and partying then it’s still a great time to be here with summer beginning now! In summary, my main advice is to have a flexible mentality and you’ll enjoy the move.
